The Lord will provide
‘The Lord Will Provide’; as it is said to this day, ‘On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.’” Genesis 22:14
Genesis 22 contains one of the most challenging moments in Scripture. God asks Abraham to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac. At first reading it can seem shocking, actually it remains shocking regardless of how many times you read it. But the passage begins by telling us something crucial: “God tested Abraham.” This was not a temptation toward evil, but a test that revealed the depth of Abraham’s trust in God.Isaac represented everything to Abraham. He was the child of promise, the future through which God had said blessing would come. Yet Abraham walked up the mountain believing that God would remain faithful. When Isaac asked where the sacrifice was, Abraham replied, “God will provide for himself the lamb.” And God did provide. At the last moment, a ram was given in Isaac’s place.
This story ultimately points forward to Jesus Christ. On another day, in the same region, another beloved Son would be given. This time there would be no substitute. Jesus became the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world, so that our debt could be paid and righteousness credited to us by faith.
Genesis 22 reminds us that the Christian life is one of trust. At times God calls us to surrender the very things we rely on most. Yet the mountain is not a place of destruction—it is the place where we discover that the Lord truly does provide.
