Complete Christianity

1 John 1

“And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.” 1 John 1:4

One of the wonderful promises of the Christian faith is that through Jesus Christ, our joy can be complete. John isn't saying that knowing Jesus will make our lives a little happier, but that in Him we can find something so wonderful and satisfying that we no longer need to search for something greater.

We spend so much of our lives searching for happiness. We convince ourselves that contentment is just one more purchase, one more achievement, one more holiday, or one more experience away. Yet the satisfaction these things provide is always temporary, and before long we find ourselves searching again.

But John reminds us that Christians have already found something infinitely greater. Through Jesus Christ, we have been forgiven, reconciled to God, welcomed into fellowship with Him, and given eternal life. What could this world possibly offer that compares with that?

Of course, complete joy doesn't mean a life without sadness, suffering, or disappointment. Joy is not the same as happiness. It is the deep and lasting satisfaction of knowing that in Christ we have found what our souls ultimately need.

Psalm 16:11 reminds us, “In your presence there is fullness of joy.” This is the wonderful truth John wants us to understand. If we belong to Jesus, we don't need to spend our lives searching for something greater. We have already found ‘it’, and it is Him. And in Him, our joy can be complete.
